MEPHISKAPHELES—the genre-defying legends of NYC Ska. I joined the band in 1991 when I was 22, became the manager in 1995, and have been a member for 35+ years in total. My involvement with Mephiskapheles led to work as a producer, as well as membership in two other legendary ska bands, The Toasters and Inspecter 7. Originally, I approached Meph as a way to improve and learn on the job by emulating my jazz heroes' experiences touring with big bands and horn sections in the 1940s and '50s. The project instantly took on a life of its own, thanks to our amazing fan base, and 35 years later, we're still at it. Ska'd for life! Find out more about Mephiskapheles here and here.
CURRENT BANDS
GREG ROBINSON TRIO—a trombonist's take on mainstream jazz, informed by direct contact with the innovators. Throughout my 35+ years in New York, I've continuously studied and performed jazz music. As a writer, I covered the national jazz scene, interviewing all the greats and writing about them for Windplayer, JazzTimes, and Cadence magazines. Later, I was Ira Gitler's assistant on the Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazz (Oxford) and wrote hundreds of entries, immersing myself in these innovative artists' life stories. I considered it my "graduate school." Today I'm coming full circle, performing jazz with my Trio featuring Chris Kelly on bass and Wayne Dunton on drums.
MYRONITES—when it's time to strap on an electric guitar and regress into some good, old-fashioned rock-and-roll, this is my preferred situation in which to do it: five old friends who grew up hanging out and playing music together. However, unlike most overgrown garage bands of this type, we eschew cover songs, preferring to draw from our almost 50-year catalog of original songs written by us and our friends. The band gets its name from Myron's, a now-vanished deli on Lee Road in Cleveland Heights, where we spent an inordinate amount of time goofing off and playing coin-op video games in our teen years. Note, recording below features NYC cats!
